Three-day bookfair opens at IIUI

ISLAMABAD: Bookfairs should be held regularly, as they offer a variety of books under one roof, said State Minister for Information Tariq Azeem on Monday addressing the inaugural ceremony of a three-day bookfair at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).

Intellectuals, faculty members and students of the university attended the ceremony.

A number of stalls have been set up at the fair where books on history, science, computer and biographies are on display. Azeem stressed the need for tolerance to promote the soft image of Pakistan at the international level. He said education is a vital ingredient of enlightened moderation, which can help take the country on the path of development.

He said tolerance and difference of opinion could help promote discussion, which was necessary for sharing of knowledge. He said Pakistani youth represent the true values of our society.

He said the government was striving to allocate maximum available resources for promotion of education in the country, adding that the government had set up 120 universities so far and Rs 216 billion were being spent on the development of the education sector.

Azeem said the amount being spent on the education sector was not enough, as this sector needed more funds. However, he expressed hope that the government would achieve its targets in this regard as the country’s economy was getting a boost due to trade friendly policies.

He said Pakistan had become a role model for developing countries as far as economic growth was concerned.

MMA leader Fareed Paracha and IIUI President Zafar Ishaq Ansari also addressed the inaugural ceremony.
